When young they have small spoon-shaped leaves at the end but as the plant ages and matures these straighten out to become almost like a reed
it grows eventually to around 8m tall and not often much beyond that in NZ
it picks up speed as it ages
It is distinguished from related species by its small stature and light green-blue-ish leaves
